Interview with Peter van Kampen - Live Simply: So That Others Might Simply Live

Last week, in our discussions about the Common Good, Dominic and I talked about the doctrine of the Universal Destination of Goods. In the spirit of Pope Francis’s teaching that realities are more important than ideas, this week we are talking with Peter van Kampen, a youth minister in Canada who has lived out these teachings in his daily life.

A year ago I wrote an article titled, Is Wealth Contrary to the Gospel? After it was published, a theologian in Canada reached out to me and said I might be interested in an interview he did with Peter van Kampen. I was interested. And I was captivated by Peter’s story.

Two things stood out to me. The first was how Peter was able to share his story in a way that was convicting, but in a way that didn’t assert that every good Catholic must live the way he did. He respected the consciences of his listeners. The second was how freeing a life of simplicity sounded.

It was a blessing to interview Peter. I hope you find his story as compelling as I do.

Dominic and Paul talk with Peter van Kampen, a youth minister and author who has written about Catholic teaching on wealth and simplicity. More important than that though, he has taken steps to live out this teaching. In fact, it was through first following the teaching that he eventually came to understand it. Peter’s story is prophetic, that is, it challenges and inspires others to embrace “a way of life marked by the flavor of the Gospel” (Fratelli Tutti 1).

Peter van Kampen is a Youth Ministry Coordinator who lives with his wife and 5 kids in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Peter is the author of 3 books, including Live Simply: So That Others Might Simply Live.
