Jordan Daniel Wood - Hell and Universalism
Podcast: Season 3, Episode 12
It was wonderful to have Jordan Daniel Wood on for a third time! I’m grateful for the generosity he has shown us with his time.
When I first came across Jordan’s work a year and a half ago I was intrigued by the way he talked about salvation and I suspected he leaned toward universalism. Since then, he has talked directly about universalism with Larry Chapp and on the Grace Saves All podcast.
Personally, I’m sympathetic to universalism and find some of the arguments for it compelling. But I also trust the Church’s Magisterium and take it’s teaching on Hell seriously. So I have been wanting to talk with Jordan and navigate that tension in a way that’s faithful to the Magisterium, not in opposition.
During our first interview we talked about the difference between the work of the catechist and the work of the theologian. Pope Francis gave an address back in November where he distinguished the two:
“The catechist must give the correct doctrine, the solid doctrine; not possible novelties, of which some are good, but what is solid…Theologians risk to go further, and it will be the Magisterium that stops them. But the vocation of the theologian is always to venture to go further, because he or she is seeking, and is trying to make theology more explicit.”
I bring that up again because I’m a catechist and Jordan’s a theologian, so I thought that would be an excellent framework for this discussion.
I always love talking with Jordan and I hope you enjoy listening just as much. This episode is now available on Youtube and in your favorite podcast app.

In their third discussion with Jordan Daniel Wood, Dominic and Paul discuss Hell and Universalism. Using Pope Francis’s distinction between the role of the catechist and the role of the theologian, they put what the Church teaches about Hell into dialogue with Jordan’s theological studies. They talk about how holding the tension between the solid teaching and the theological proposals that venture further, without letting go of the teaching, can create a space for contemplation and for God to work.
Jordan Daniel Wood is a stay-at-home dad of four young daughters. He entered the Catholic Church about eight years ago. He holds a PhD in Historical Theology from Boston College, and, when not changing diapers and making school lunches, is currently working on two translation projects. He is also the author of the book, “The Whole Mystery of Christ: Creation as Incarnation in Maximus Confessor.”
