Solidarity: commitment to the common good amid structural sin
Podcast: Season 2, Episode 10
In our second-to-last episode of this season, Dominic and I talk about the fourth principle of Catholic Social Teaching: solidarity.
Flowing from the belief that God is the Father and Creator of everything is the principle that all people are our brothers and sisters. We are all radically interconnected. And not just humanity, but all of creation.
This means that what we do, even the most private of actions, ripples out and impacts others, for good or for ill. In other words, I can’t just pee in my corner of the pool without it effecting everyone else.
The antidote to the structures and cultures of sin in the world is precisely the virtue of solidarity. That’s what this episode is about.
Also, as we announce in the podcast, we have a special guest next week for the final episode of the season: Gloria Purvis! She will answer the question, “Can a Catholic be woke?”
Look for that interview to drop next week. In the meantime, episode ten of the PFG Podcast is now available on Youtube and podcast feeds!
Paul and Dominic discuss the fourth principle of Catholic Social Teaching: solidarity. In this conversation, they explore what the Church teaches about structural sin, the preferential option for the poor, racism, immigration, and care for the environment. These are challenging teachings that call us to envision a world that is healed and transformed by Jesus Christ.
“Solidarity must be seen above all in its value as a moral virtue that determines the order of institutions. On the basis of this principle the “structures of sin” that dominate relationships between individuals and peoples must be overcome. They must be purified and transformed into structures of solidarity through the creation or appropriate modification of laws, market regulations, and juridical systems. Solidarity is also an authentic moral virtue, not a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good. That is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church)
